Pay it Forward

I am very lucky to be one of the bloggers to be selected randomly by Shel to participate in this rather cool giveaway. It isn't a giveaway of the usual type. In fact it is more about giving than receiving. In return for receiving a handmade gift from Shel I will select 3 people and send them a handmade gift within the next 365 days. I am willing to send anywhere in the world, so wherever you are please join in this fun giveaway.

These are the rules:

3 people who comment will receive a handmade gift from me in the next 365 days.
BUT: You must have a blog and be willing to do the same for 3 other lucky bloggers.

So don't hold back - leave me a comment and I will get to work making you a gift. I am looking forward to it!

Binding Tutorial

I have been binding 6 quilts over the last couple of days so I thought I would take a few photos and share with you how I do it. Hope this makes sense!

Making The Fabric Strip to Bind Your Quilt

  1. To make one long strip of fabric for the binding it is likely that you will need to sew several smaller strips together. When you sew the strips together you want to reduce bulk as much as possible. To do this sew diagonal seams. Lay your strips at right angles to each other with right sides facing.

  2. Sew diagonally from the top left hand corner to the bottom right hand corner.

  3. Trim the extra fabric from the seam. Leave about 1/4 inch (6mm)

  4. Open seam and press.

TIP: Always make more binding than you think is necessary. It is better to have too much than too little!

Attach Binding To Quilt

  1. Leave a tail of about 3 inches (10 cm) Sew the binding to the quilt and stop when you are 1 / 4 inch (6mm) from the corner. Backstitch to secure and cut the thread. Remove from your machine.

  2. Fold the strip back on itself diagonally.

  3. Fold the strip down and sew from the end (with a 1/4 inch or 6mm seam allowance). Repeat this for every corner.

  4. When you are only a few inches from where you started the binding, backstitch and cut the thread and remove from your machine. Fold the strips of binding under so that there is about 1/8 inch (3mm) gap between the ends of the binding. Pin to mark.

  5. Put the strips together so that the right sides are facing and the strips are at right angles to each other. Sew diagonally from the top right corner to the bottom left corner. Open up seam and check against your quilt to check it fits. (If not undo and repeat) If the binding is correct, cut the extra bulk from the seam. Finish sewing the binding to the quilt.

  6. You should now have the binding attached to the quilt. Hand stitch the back of the binding in place.

Battle Wounds

You can tell I have been quilting again!

It looks as though I have been in a nasty scrap with the neighbourhood cat!

I get so engrossed in what I am doing that I don't even notice. Only when I had a shower this morning and every scratch stung like crazy did I realise! The second day of quilting is always the worst - then each pin catches me where I was scratched yesterday!

Do you have any crafting injuries?

Please go and check out Christina's finished Animal Friends Fabric book. I think it turned out fantastic. Thank you very much Christina and Christina's Mum for all your valuable feedback. I appreciate it very much and am busy editing the epattern.

While you are there you should also check out her gorgeous softies!

On my desk

I know "On my Desk" is no more but since all that is going on around here is unpicking, re-pinning and cutting strips for binding, this is the most interesting photo I could come up with.

Unfortunately we have a fridge built into a cupboard so I can't join in the "On my fridge" that Amy is hosting - thanks Christina for the link. It looks like fun!

Right back to pinning - my fingers are beginning to go numb!

Unpicking

I have decided I just can't live with a couple of my quilts the way they turned out. So today I will unpick and re-pin them! Urghhh!

I have procrastinated for the last couple of weeks thinking maybe I could get away with redoing parts of the quilt - or that maybe it was not that bad. But I knew deep down that I would have to redo them. I have just been putting off the inevitable.

Now that I have started unpicking - I feel so much better!

Mono to Quitasol

Getting there! All the blocks are done - which is just as well as Josefina was born on Tuesday. Congratulations Rosario and Alejandro! I have a little more time as we won't see the new arrival until January when we will finally go back to Chile to visit.

Thermofax Robots

At the same time I ordered the thermofax screen with the car, train, lorry, digger and bus I also ordered a screen to be made with my robots which I posted about here.

I have had more problems printing with this screen than the other screen. There are many fine lines close together as well as text. A lot of the time the ink is bleeding from one line to the other.
I guess this is either because I am using too much ink or the ink is too runny.
When I try to use less ink I usually end up with parts of the image not printing.
I think this is more to do with uneven pressure. I find it very difficult to get even pressure with the squeegee used with a thermofax screen.
I have got some good prints though. But I am a little frustrated!

On my Desk

I was extremely lucky to be the winner for the European draw of True Up's 6 month anniversary giveaway. Linda from Volksfaden generously provided the prize of a 60 Euro voucher to spend in her online shop, Volksfaden.
The shop is great and Linda is extremely nice. I definitely recommend it to anyone living in Europe. There are so many gorgeous fabrics. It was really hard to choose. I was torn between looking for something for a project for the girls. (They still don't have their own bed quilts) or something for me. Something for a specific project or something just because!
Above are the fabrics I chose. They are on my desk today because I just love looking and touching them and I haven't got any time today to do any crafting!

Never Enough Polka Dots

I love using polka dot fabric in children's quilts and since I usually only use small pieces for the odd blocks here and there I thought why not print some of my own.

I printed out a block of dots and drew them onto my screen using drawing fluid. After it was dry I squeegeed the screen filler across the screen - only 1 swipe this time! (Only swiping once made a huge difference when it came to washing out the drawing fluid)

This was also a good project to test printing on different fabrics. On some fabrics the ink bled a little and the polka dots grew in size. But I am very happy with the prints and have already cut some to size for yet another quilt! I am swimming in half finished quilts at the moment. My goal for the rest of November is to finish off what I have started. The problem is I keep thinking of what I want to do next.

Pattern Testers

I would like to ask a favour. I have just finished writing up the pattern to make a fabric book like the one above.

Would anyone like to test the pattern for me?

Also a big thank you to Christina of A little Birdy told me. She sent me these gorgeous hair clips.

Beautifully packaged too!

Amelie loves them. I tried to get a photo of her wearing them but she wasn't co-operating this morning! But she did insist on wearing one to Kita to show her friend Marie-Lou. Thank you very much Christina.

Thermofax Printing

A little bit ago I finished off this design and sent it here to be made into a thermofax screen. I would have liked to have run it through the machine myself but I have yet to work up the courage to go to one of the tattoo shops around here to ask if they have a thermofax machine and whether I can use it!

The screen came back to me within a couple of days - extremely quickly! My only quibble is that I sent a design which I hoped would have been burned on the screen lengthways. Instead it was burned on the screen widthways. This made it difficult to print the edges of the design. I guess next time I have to be explicit with my requirements.

I used a special squeegee, which is more like those you use to clean windows with. Not a lot of pressure is needed to print with a thermofax screen. In fact, too much pressure will damage the screen. A normal squeegee would be too hard.

I also found that I had to change the angle which I held the squeegee. I needed to hold it more upright - about 60 - 90 degrees!

Another difference is there is no well for your ink. It is very easy to over ink the screen. With screen printing I used lots of ink but with thermofax printing this can get you in a bit of a pickle. At one point I had to scrape the ink off as it was getting everywhere and my prints were too ink saturated.

Clean up was very easy. The screen has a plastic frame so there is no worry about damaging cardboard. It is very important to only use cold water and hot water might damage the screen. But with a drop of washing up liquid and a soft paintbrush, the screen was clean in seconds!

What I loved about printing with this screen was the noise it made! Difficult to describe but like that noise when you scratch your fingernails against textured vinyl.

You can apparently turn the screen over and print to achieve a mirror image. However, this risks damaging the screen so I have not tried it yet. I will probably try this when I have had enough of this screen.

Next thing to try is pattern repeats!

On my Desk

A thermofax screen I ordered from here. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Good luck -but not too much as I want to win!

Gato to León

Slowly getting there. We had much discussion over whether Hipopótamo could be shortened to Hipo - but then decided it was safer to stick with the longer word! Hipo also means hiccup in Castellano which I know because Amelie used to have massive fits of hiccups both when she was in my belly and when she was a new born. I used to sing to her for hours a song all about Hipos. That seems a long time ago now!

Colour Mixing

Check out this game here. It is designed for kids and I stumbled across when looking for colouring pages for Amelie. I found it very addictive.

Another one here

Abeja to Foca

The first 6 blocks of the quilt are done - they just need a good iron! Now onto the next 6!

On my Desk

I've got to get a move on with the alphabet quilt for our new niece. My sister-in-law's due date is getting closer and closer and I still have so much to do!

Other Players

Reflection

This is also known as mirror pattern or flip pattern.

In these patterns the motif or tile has an axis of reflection. Points on one side of the axis are the same as points equal distance on the other side of the axis. In other words a design has reflectional symmetry if it can be bisected by one or more mirror axes.

Horizontal Reflection

Vertical Reflection

In a reflection pattern the mirror image of the motif is equal in every way to the original motif.

Glide reflection is when a reflection is coupled with a translation along the direction of the reflection.

Things to try
Fold a piece of paper in half and draw on one half. Then copy from one side of the paper to the other.

Fold a piece of paper in half and draw on one side of the paper. Copy to the other side of the paper, then shift the copied image (glide reflection)

Axis can be part of design – i.e trunk of tree, stem of flower wreath etc.

Try different axes, horizontal, vertical, diagonal.

Tips

This is an easy pattern to use with stencils as you need only flip the stencil over.

Often used in borders.

When hand drawn will not necessarily be exact. Consider whether you want the end effect to be more professional or “hand made” looking as slight differences will be noticeable.
