Fat Quarterly Issue 7 is out now! All about colour palettes and where to find help in choosing colours for your projects.

Stash Reduction

It's all about the stash at the moment. I am in desperate need of a little stash reduction so that I can justify some new fabric goodies!

So I signed up for Katy's International Stash Giveaway.

Visit me on February 4th to enter my part of the giveaway and then head over to all the other participants to see what they are willing to part with! Should be fun and you might snag yourself some great fabric. A big thanks to Katy for coming up with the idea and sorting it all out.

In another attempt to reduce stash I signed up for the "OP Challenge". It is a kind of virtual quilting retreat. Sounds very interesting. I am not sure what it will involve but it seems to be all about the colour orange.

I certainly have a lot of orange!

WIP - Stash Organisation

This could take me some time. I am in the process of moving my stash from our bedroom to the spare room upstairs as it has slowly been taking over our bedroom. Our room has turned into a health hazard when the lights are out as we keep tripping over boxes of fabric!

So I thought I might as well organise myself a bit during the move. Usually when I start a project I turn all the fabric out all over the place looking for the right pieces of fabric that go together. It then takes me forever to put it all away again. It dawned on me that it would be much better to have a file with samples of all my fabrics in it, that I could peruse to my heart's content when starting a new project.

This is the form I came up with.

I can record what the fabric is called, who makes it, where I bought it, how much it cost, how much I have, what I plan to do with it and most importantly where I have stashed it! In the square on the left hand side I plan to pin a small sample of the fabric. I want to pin the samples so I can take them out when planning a project and see how the fabrics work together.

This is the snazzy file I made to keep all these forms in.

I sewed the pieces in place using running stitch and then fused the front to a card file. Finally I topstitched to keep in place.

If you would like to use this form you can download it here.

Now to tackle the next box of fabrics! It keeps me busy while I think about what to print with my gocco!

Distracted

Hmmm. I had been making good progress on my PIF goodies, (Hopefully they will be in the post soon) but then I picked this up from the Customs people yesterday.

I am extremely lucky to have a wonderful Grandfather who lives in Brisbane. So NEHOC posted to him and he forwarded to me! Of course it arrived the day after we left for Chile (isn't that always the way) and again lucky for me, a neighbour called the customs people and asked them to pretty please hold on to it for me until I got back from Chile.

The problem is now all I can do is think about it and what I want to print. And is it worth using precious supplies on! I dillied and dallied all day yesterday and didn't settle down to anything. I think I need to put it to one side while I work off the nervous excitement!

Calendar Quilt

Just before heading off to Chile I signed up for the Calendar Quilt hosted by Rachel from p.s. I quilt.

The idea is to make a strip quilt and add a strip every day of the year. Or at least add 365 strips, whether or not you do it every day is up to you. This is a great idea but I can't quite decide how to approach it.

I can't decide whether to make a quilt that I will actually use or a journal of my work over the year.

I would like to make Amelie a new quilt for her bed. I have an idea which would suit strip quilting. But it would have nothing "calendar" about it except making it slowly over the year.

On the other hand I am thinking about making 12 mini quilts using strips of fabric that I have used in projects each month. At the end of the year I will be able to see which fabrics I was more drawn to and need to restock, and which colours feature more prominently in my work.

I could also practise different quilting techniques on these mini quilts.

I am leaning more towards the journal type approach although it is not going to end up as a complete quilt at the end.

What do you think?

Air France Rant

When we booked our tickets on Air France to fly to Chile (almost a year before we wanted to go) we asked if we could reserve seats. Travelling with a 1 and 3 year old is stressful enough and we wanted to make sure that we were all sitting together. We were told no it was too far in advance. Fair enough.

A couple of weeks before the flight we rang Air France to try and book our seats together. We were told no we would have to wait until 30 hours before the flight and book online. Again fair enough.

30 hours before the flight we logged in online and tried to book our seats. We were told by the system that we could not book our seats as we were travelling with children. Hmmm. Not really understanding the logic of this we rang Air France. I thought perhaps they waited to assign the front row seats until they knew how many children there were flying and the ages of the children etc. But to be honest we were not fussy. As long as we had seats together we didn't mind where we were sitting.

The very unhelpful people at Air France said they could not possibly assign us seats together because we had children and because we already had seats assigned. Hmmm - how was that possible? We asked where the seats were and we told that they were all separate. After pointing out politely that no way in the world could Amelie sit separately from us for the duration of the flight to Chile, we were told we would have to wait until we were at the airport to sort it out.

Feeling rather stressed we arrived at the airport with PLENTY of time. Just as well as our flight to Paris was cancelled due to snow. We then worked out how we were going to get to Chile. We were sent first on a flight to Dusseldorf. Before we left we asked if we could sort out our seats on the flight from Paris to Santiago. We were told that they would not do this for us as we had children (even though our bags were checked in for the whole flight).

When we arrived in Dusseldorf we asked if we could check in for the flight from Paris to Santiago. Again we were told no as we had children. At this point we met a German couple who were also flying to Santiago.

The connection in Paris was tight. So us and the German couple ran helter skelter to get to the right terminal in time. Believe me I have never run so fast especially in mini heels, with rucksack, handbag and Hanna in my arms. I also want to point out that we did not hold up the German couple. In fact sometimes we were in the lead and sometimes they were.

When we arrived at the check in desk for the flight the Air France lady took one look at us all and told the German couple to run to the gate and told us because we had children we could not get on the flight but would have to stay overnight in the airport.

At this point I lost it. I think Hanna and Amelie learnt some new vocabulary that night. I was somewhat polite but strong. What in the world was the logic where a 1 year old and a 3 year old would have to stay the night in the airport just because..... If the German couple could make it to the plane, we could damn well make it to the plane. We were told that it was because we were not checked in. But we were not checked in because nobody would check us in with children. I just don't understand it.

In the end we were allowed on the flight. And I also want to point out that we were not the last on the flight. So again the logic of not letting us on the flight was lost on me. Our seats were all separate and I have to say as a mother it was one of the worst things to hear my daughter crying as I was led to a seat the other end of the plane from her. Our fellow passengers were not in general very kind hearted. I was on the verge of tears, Hanna was crying and Amelie was shrieking Mummy, Mummy and nobody offered to move. Finally we got to sit together as my husband sorted it out. Not a single steward or stewardess was helpful.

After we got on the plane, it sat on the runway for 2 hours before taking off.

When we arrived in Santiago we were not that surprised to find we had no luggage. Nevermind, we still had 4 days before the Christening. We went and bought some cheapy shorts, t-shirts and sandals. The next day we were told that 1 out of 4 suitcases had been found. It was mine. (I can tell you that inside I did a jump for joy - at least I would have something to wear to the Christening!)

The following day we were told that one more suitcase had arrived. It was a red suitcase with name and address from some bloke travelling on Czech Airlines. How did we end up with that? The following day we were told one more suitcase had arrived. It had indeed and it was full of bits and pieces. You know the type of stuff that is packed last minute and really as an extra. So nothing useful whatsoever. We were still missing the girls Christening clothes, the candles I made, my husband's suit, the quilt for Josefina........

To make a long story short the suitcases never arrived before the Christening. They took a little holiday in Atlanta before joining us a week later.

Luckily my Mum had bought some beautiful dresses for the girls and had them in her suitcase so the girls looked absolutely gorgeous. The Christening went well despite Amelie deciding to try and make a run for it and shouting "NO NO NO I don't want it" at the top of her lungs! I love this photo!

We're Back!

The view from my in-laws' flat.

We touched down yesterday earlier than expected, which was a blessing in disguise as we arrived home to find the heating had broken down and our car wouldn't start! It is freezing in our house. Much warmer outside than in. Quite a shock to the system after average temperatures of 33.

We had an excellent time with lots of adventures. All I have to say right now is that we are never travelling Air France again. But more on that later.

Chi - Chi - Chi - Le - Le - Le

We love Chile!

We are off in a few minutes. So Adios! I would like to check in with you when we are away - but can't promise anything as we might just be too busy relaxing at the beach or up a mountain!

See you in a couple of weeks! Take care

Quilts, quilts, quilts

A sneak peek at another project underway. Not sure I have the patience for traditional applique!

Anyone interested in taking part in a virtual quilting bee? Little Blue Cottage is going to host one in 2009 and I think she still has places available. If you are interested in signing up (I already have!) comment on this post. It is based on the one run by Mamaurchin which was a great success judging by the Flickr photos.

Thanks for all the suggestions for my quilt. I am still mulling it over. I cut a few trial pieces of fabric. But now all is about going to Chile. Only about 24 hours now until we leave.

Robots and Cars Quilt

A little peek at a quilt I am working on made from lots of my own printed fabric! This is destined to be a gift for a new arrival some time in February but I am falling in love with it more every day and I am not sure I want to part with it. Probably because it is such fun to be working with fabric I designed and printed.

I can't quite decide though on a border. Plain seems too boring but pieced seems too fussy. What do you think?

Happy New Year

Hope you all had a great New Year's Eve. Ours was spent bed hopping with the girls. We attempted to all snuggle together to watch the fireworks but the girls got too excited to be all together in one bed at midnight! Lots of climbing on heads and "hey Mummy look I'm swimming under the covers", so we abandoned ship.
So happy New Year, I hope 2009 is a good year all round.

I finished the candles yesterday. Lots of fiddly cutting but I think they look alright and not too much of a home made job.

Now all I have to do is get them to Chile in one piece.
